Inside Neoz Part 5 – Solid forged brass
One of the most distinctive features of our solid brass cordless lamps are their hefty weight and beautiful deep brass mirror finish. It is both functional and aesthetically pleasing as a dining table centerpiece.
This solid brass body has been achieved through forging, a process that dates back to the 12th century. It is a process of forming and shaping metals through the use of hammering, pressing or rolling.
For our brass lamp bodies, our supplier employs a pressing process whereby a forging presses exert tremendous pressure on a heated pure brass ingot producing a product free of imperfections. During this process, the coarse grain structure is broken up and replaced by finer grains. Shrinkage and gas porosity inherent in the cast metal are consolidated through the reduction of the ingot, achieving sound centers and structural integrity.
The resulting tight grain structure offers great wear resistance. The newly formed part is then CNC machined to size, individually hand polished before receiving a lacquered protective coating or chrome plating that prevents tarnishing. The finished body is shipped to our factory in Sydney, where the lamp control unit and handmade shade is assembled and tested before delivery to our customers.
